Are fabric resistance bands better than rubber resistance bands?
Fabric bands are more durable and they provide more resistance compared to rubber or latex bands.
The main benefit is that they are awesome as “booty bands” as they are a great match for glute training as the glutes can generate a TON of power.
While thinner rubber bands may not always be up to the task of torque-heavy exercises, fabric bands are more than up to the task and eliminate everyone’s worst nightmare–a band ripping halfway through a set.
Also, and this is based on personal experience, but I find that fabric resistance bands are a lot less jerky and “twitchy” compared to latex and rubber bands.
Where is the best place to put a fabric resistance band when working out?
Exercises where you can generate a lot of force without placing undue stress on joints are best-suited for fabric resistance bands.
Because they don’t have as much elasticity as rubber bands, place them above the knee joint when using them.
Placing them below the knees, or at the ankles, will cause excess shear on the knee and/or ankles.
Can fabric resistance bands make you stronger?
Hell yeah they can! Studies have shown resistance bands in general to be highly effective at growing strength with squats, rows, and back extensions1.
For strength-specific improvement, do sets of 5-8 repetitions with total control and a reduced tempo (i.e. two-count up, one-count hold, two-count down). For hypertrophy (building muscle), crank up the repetitions to 8 to 12 repetitions2.
